MASIH ALINEJAD

President

Masih Alinejad is an Iranian-American political journalist and women’s rights activist. Masih gives a voice to Iranian political activists on the world stage. She has faced assassination and abduction attempts from the Iranian state.

GARRY KASPAROV

Vice president

Garry Kasparov is an outspoken advocate for human rights and democracy in Russia. Widely considered history’s greatest chess player, Kasparov retired from the sport in 2005, to devote his life to writing and human rights activism.

LEOPOLDO LÓPEZ

General Secretary

Leopoldo López is a Venezuelan opposition leader. Leopoldo was imprisoned by the regime in 2014 for his democratic activism. After escaping Venezuela in 2020, Leopoldo was reunited with his family in Spain, where he now lives in exile.

JOEY SIU

Joey Siu was a leading member of Hong Kong’s 2019 pro-democracy movement. Now in exile, Siu is a dedicated advocate for the Tibetans, Uyghurs, and other oppressed communities.

CARINE KANIMBA

Spokesperson

Carine Kanimba survived Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, during which her father, Paul Rusesabagina, saved more than 1,200 people in his hotel. In 2020, her father was abducted and imprisoned for speaking out against Paul Kagame. Carine and her family led the #FreeRusesabagina campaign, which led to his release in 2023.

WORLD LIBERTY CONGRESS​

The World Liberty Congress is the biggest gathering of pro-democracy leadership, representing:

- Activists from 60 countries ruled by autocracy.

- Hundreds of WLC members in 5 regional networks.

YOUTH LIBERTY CONGRESS​

The YLC brings together student leaders attending universities in authoritarian countries to build a network of democrats across the world

SUPPORT

We are the global experts on freedom. The experience of our members gives us a unique perspective on how dictators operate. We share our knowledge to empower millions of people globally.

FREEDOM ACADEMY

We bring activists together to develop the knowledge, tools and structures vital for taking the battle to autocrats and dictators. Hundreds of delegates have been trained at Freedom Academies in Africa and South America, with online courses to be launched soon teaching the principles and tactics of nonviolence and conflict resolution, and the fundamentals of international law and liberal democracy. We plan to train one million activists in the next five years.

POLITICAL PRISONERS SUPPORT NETWORK

With an estimated one million political prisoners in the world, the need to offer support and resources to them and their families is urgent. Our political prisoner guide helps prisoners and their families to navigate this most difficult ordeal. It is a unique guide written by people with direct experience of campaigning for unlawfully detained family members.

FINANCIAL FREEDOM

We educate our members on the power of technologies such as Bitcoin and AI in the service of human rights, financial freedom, and civil liberties, and ensure emergency financial assistance is accessible at speed.​

SPEAK OUT

We are the voice of freedom. We make the unfiltered case for democracy everywhere.

OFFICE OF FREEDOM AFFAIRS

We advocate for freedom by supporting the causes of our members shaping the global agenda on political prisoners, anti-kleptocracy and sanctions, financial Freedom, support for exiled activists. WLC’s Office for Foreign Affairs will act as a unified diplomatic service for those whose states do not represent their citizens.​

LIBERTY MEDIA NETWORK​

The WLC’s media operation offers news alerts, commentary and analysis from the world’s foremost democracy activists, ensuring democratic voices are heard above the noise and disinformation created by authoritarian regimes.​

UNITED AGAINST GENDER APARTHEID

United Against Gender Apartheid is World Liberty Congress’s flagship program to bring women across the world together, campaigning to have gender apartheid classified as a crime in international law.

Global Solidarity

We prioritize the struggles of everyone living under tyranny, no matter where in the world they live, and stand in solidarity with all who share our vision of a free and democratic world

Women Leaders

We are dedicated to women empowerment both within our own ranks, and in societies marked by authoritarianism, religious extremism, and patriarchal traditions. We aim to promote gender equality, including reproductive rights, economic empowerment, and the political participation of women.

Nonviolent Action

We neither condone nor encourage violence, we are committed to the principles and tactics of nonviolent resistance in all that we do

Transparency and Accountability

We are committed to full transparency in our decisionmaking and funding both within and outside the organization, and accountability to our membership in all that we do

We are building the Congress as a legitimate and democratic institution with shared principles and mission, representation of all countries under autocratic regimes and clear governance structure.
The Congress will meet every year for the annual General Assembly with the intention to become an alternative voice to autocratic regimes.
