Carmen Lau, dedicated Leadership Council member of the World Liberty Congress, and a respected human rights activist, has been issued an arrest warrant by the Hong Kong authorities, along with a HKD $1 million bounty. She has been charged for incitement to secession and collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security.
Carmen Lau’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the voiceless and holding the oppressive Hong Kong regime accountable has made her a symbol of resilience and hope for countless individuals around the world. This attempt to intimidate and silence her is not only an attack on her but an attack on the universal values of human rights and liberty that all nations and people should uphold.
The World Liberty Congress condemns these actions in the strongest possible terms. We regard them as part of a broader pattern of authoritarian regimes targeting human rights defenders to stifle dissent and shield themselves from accountability. The WLC stands unequivocally with Carmen Lau and all those who face persecution for their advocacy and activism.
We call on the international community to unite in rejecting this baseless and politically motivated warrant. Governments, civil society organizations, and individuals around the world must take action to protect Carmen Lau and others like her, ensuring their safety and ability to continue their vital work.
The World Liberty Congress reaffirms its solidarity with Carmen Lau and its dedication to defending the fundamental freedoms she represents. We will not be deterred by threats or intimidation and will continue to support those who risk everything in the pursuit of justice, equality, and liberty for all.
In response to the arrest warrant, Carmen said: “I have always considered serving Hong Kongers and fighting for our freedom and democracy my lifelong obligation since the day I was elected as a district councillor. And I hope to have every one of you standing with me in this fight for Hong Kong, and hold the human rights offenders accountable.”
