The World Liberty Congress stands in unwavering solidarity with Dr. Kizza Besigye and all political prisoners in Uganda whose fundamental rights to health, dignity, and freedom are under threat. We echo the urgent concerns raised by the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) regarding Dr. Besigye’s deteriorating health while detained in Luzira Prison.
Dr. Besigye’s critical condition, as evidenced by his recent court appearance, demands immediate action. His right to access specialized medical care, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Nelson Mandela Rules, and other international standards, is non-negotiable. Denying him this right is a violation of both Ugandan and international law.
We demand:
1. The immediate release of Dr. Kizza Besigye on medical and humanitarian grounds to access urgent healthcare from facilities and specialists of his choice.
2. The release of all political prisoners in Uganda, whose detention undermines democratic principles and human rights.
3. Full compliance with international human rights standards, ensuring that all detainees receive adequate medical care and are treated with dignity.
The World Liberty Congress condemns the continued detention of Dr. Besigye and others under conditions that threaten their lives and well-being. We call on the Ugandan government, judiciary, and prison authorities to act swiftly to prevent irreversible harm.
We stand with the people of Uganda in their struggle for justice, freedom, and the right to health for all. The international community is watching, and history will judge those who fail to uphold these basic human rights.
