Standing Firm Amid Risks: World Liberty Congress Supports Amanzuru’s Brave Advocacy in Ugandan Parliamentary Dialogue

The World Liberty Congress acknowledges the recent invitation for a private meeting extended by the Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament to Mr. Amanzuru William Leslie. Mr. Amanzuru is not only the elected Regional Secretary for our organization and the Team Leader of Friends of Zoka but also a committed environmental activist and human rights defender. This invitation follows his interview on NBS and Daily Monitor, where he highlighted the concerning involvement of military forces in the destruction of the Zoka Forest.

We are hopeful that this forthcoming interaction will lead to meaningful legislative action that will not only curb the militarization aiding in the destruction of Zoka Forest but also enhance the protection of environmental activists and human rights defenders like Mr. Amanzuru who are tirelessly working to conserve this vital ecosystem. The intervention by the Ugandan Parliament could mark a significant step towards safeguarding both the environment and the rights of those defending it.

However, given the context and the risks involved with such high-profile engagements, we are closely monitoring Mr. Amanzuru William Leslie’s safety. We urge all parties involved to ensure that this dialogue is conducted in an environment free from intimidation or any form of retribution.

We stand firmly in support of Mr. Amanzuru, recognizing his dual role as an environmental activist and human rights defender, advocating for an end to the environmental degradation of Zoka Forest and for the protection of those who stand for these causes. We trust that this meeting will be a constructive one, leading to actions that reflect the urgency of environmental conservation and human rights in Uganda.
