STATEMENT: WLC strongly condemns the unjustly sentences against the 45 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong

The sentencing of 45 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, ranged from 50 months to 10 years, under Beijing’s draconian national security law is a devastating blow to freedom and justice. These individuals—former lawmakers, unionists, journalists, and activists—were arrested in January 2021 and convicted on charges related to ‘subversion and conspiracy,’ including participating in a primary election in July 2020 aimed at securing democratic representation in Hong Kong’s legislature.

Among them, Professor Benny Tai received the longest sentence of 10 years, reflecting the severity of the crackdown, while Owen Chow was handed the second-longest sentence of 7 years and 9 months, highlighting the harsh punishments for their advocacy.

“Yesterday, 45 democratic campaigners, including a close friend of mine, Owen Chow, were sentenced by the Hong Kong authorities in the city’s largest trial under the harsh National Security Law. The World Liberty Congress strongly condemns this unjust persecution, which represents yet another blatant attack on the democratic freedoms and human rights of the people of Hong Kong. The international community must stand united in holding the Hong Kong and Chinese governments accountable for their ongoing suppression of dissent. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of these individuals who have been targeted simply for being a voice for the people of Hong Kong.” Joey Siu (Hong Kong), Executive Council, World Liberty Congress.

“Today, many of these courageous freedom fighters—our friends and former colleagues—face the sentencing for their commitment to our people. As heartbreaking as this reality is, I am encouraged to see governments and allies paying close attention to this cases. I call on the democratic governments to take meaningful action. This includes imposing sanctions on Hong Kong officials complicit in human rights violations, passing Hong Kong-related bills, including the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act in the U.S., and ensuring humanitarian pathways are inclusive of released political prisoners, giving them a chance to rebuild their lives in safety.” Carmen Lau (Hong Kong), Leadership Council, World Liberty Congress.

WLC reiterates its call for the global community to advocate for the freedom of political prisoners everywhere. Governments must act to hold authoritarian regimes accountable for their ongoing human rights abuses and ensure that those who fight for democracy and freedom are not abandoned in their struggle.

We are building the Congress as a legitimate and democratic institution with shared principles and mission, representation of all countries under autocratic regimes and clear governance structure.
The Congress will meet every year for the annual General Assembly with the intention to become an alternative voice to autocratic regimes.
