WLC African Regional Network Condemns the Abduction of Ugandan Opposition Leader Dr. Kizza Besigye

The African Regional Network of the World Liberty Congress (WLC) strongly condemns the abduction of Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition leader, from Nairobi and his subsequent detention in Uganda on baseless charges. Dr. Besigye, a steadfast advocate for democracy and human rights across Africa, has dedicated his life to advancing justice and freedom. His abduction represents a blatant violation of international law and human rights.

We are deeply concerned by reports suggesting that Kenyan authorities may have facilitated this unlawful act, undermining regional stability and the principles of justice. This alarming incident mirrors the earlier case of 36 Ugandan activists who were abducted in Kenya under similar circumstances and later produced before a Ugandan military court. These repeated cross-border abuses reveal a troubling pattern of collaboration between autocratic regimes to suppress opposition voices and crush democratic movements.

The African Regional Network of the WLC calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and demands accountability from both the Ugandan and Kenyan governments for their roles in these violations.

Furthermore, we urge the African Union, regional bodies, and the international community to take a firm stand against such oppressive actions. Governments and global organizations must hold Uganda and Kenya accountable for their blatant disregard for human rights, international law, and the rule of law.

The abduction and detention of Dr. Besigye underscore the critical need for regional solidarity to defend democratic principles, protect human rights defenders, and resist authoritarianism in all its forms.

This statement has been signed by members of the African Regional Network of the World Liberty Congress, who stand united in their commitment to defend democracy, human rights, and justice across the continent.

We are building the Congress as a legitimate and democratic institution with shared principles and mission, representation of all countries under autocratic regimes and clear governance structure.
The Congress will meet every year for the annual General Assembly with the intention to become an alternative voice to autocratic regimes.
