FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – World Liberty Congress Condemns the Arrest of Tendai Biti and Demands His Immediate Release

The World Liberty Congress unequivocally condemns the arrest and imprisonment of our Leadership Council member, Tendai Biti—an act of political retaliation for his principled stand against unconstitutional amendments in Zimbabwe.

Tendai Biti has been a leading voice in defending Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution. His opposition to efforts aimed at extending presidential terms, dismantling term limits, and stripping citizens of their right to directly elect their leader reflects a commitment to the rule of law and democratic governance. His detention is not incidental—it is a calculated attempt to silence dissent and intimidate those who dare to defend constitutional order.

The criminalization of peaceful opposition is a direct assault on fundamental freedoms and a dangerous erosion of democratic norms. It sends a clear and chilling signal: that speaking out for the Constitution may come at the cost of one’s liberty.

We call for immediate and decisive action:
• The unconditional and immediate release of Tendai Biti
• An end to the systematic targeting of civic leaders, opposition voices, and constitutional defenders
• The full protection of the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and political participation

We urge the African Union, the United Nations, and democratic governments worldwide to respond with urgency and resolve. Silence in the face of repression only emboldens further abuses.

Defending the Constitution is not a crime—it is a duty. And those who uphold it must be protected, not persecuted.
