Honduras Electoral Process

Honduras is scheduled to hold General Elections on November 30, in which citizens will choose the authorities for the 2026–2030 period: President, 128 members of the National Congress, 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament, and 298 mayors. As this electoral process approaches, the following developments are observed with grave concern:

1. The 45-day extension of the state of exception, which severely limits and restricts Constitutional Guarantees, and has been widely questioned by national and international organizations. Its continuation during a highly sensitive electoral period raises the alarming possibility that it may be used as an instrument to suppress the political opposition.

2. The persistent attacks by Armed Forces authorities against freedom of expression, particularly targeting journalists and various representatives of civil society, constitute a direct threat to democratic principles.

3. The interference of multiple state institutions and the political pressure exerted on electoral authorities, including complaints and prosecutorial actions initiated against Magistrates and Electoral Councilors, undermine their technical and financial independence a mere fifteen days before the general elections.

The World Liberty Congress urges the authorities of all branches of the Honduran state to uphold the rule of law, safeguard democratic norms, and faithfully fulfill their constitutional mandates. We call on all actors to adhere to their institutional responsibilities, to promote and protect the nation’s democracy, and to ensure that the Honduran people can cast their votes freely and massively as a fundamental mechanism for strengthening democratic governance.

Liberty and democracy must prevail. The will of the Honduran people must be fully respected.
