Statement by the World Liberty Congress on Democratic Backsliding and Civil Unrest in Turkey

The World Liberty Congress voices grave concern over the recent arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul and a prominent opposition figure, alongside more than 100 others. These detentions pose a serious threat to democratic principles and the rule of law in Turkey.

In the aftermath of İmamoğlu’s detention on the 19th March, 2025 large-scale demonstrations have erupted in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and other cities, with citizens denouncing what they perceive as an attack on democracy. The Turkish government’s response to these peaceful protests has been profoundly alarming. Police have used excessive force, clashed with demonstrators, and the arrests of hundreds in connection with the rallies. Such actions are incompatible with democratic norms and severely erode public trust in state institutions.

We stand in steadfast support of the people of Turkey—particularly students, journalists, and civil society actors—who are peacefully asserting their basic freedoms. Their resilience in the face of escalating repression is a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of democratic resistance.
The ongoing unrest reflects a broader dissatisfaction with a government increasingly associated with authoritarianism, corruption, and a lack of transparency. After years of politically motivated prosecutions and systemic injustices, the people of Turkey are demonstrating a renewed commitment to democratic participation and accountability.

As a member of the Council of Europe and a candidate for European Union accession, Turkey is obligated to uphold democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. We call on the Turkish government to immediately end its suppression of dissenting voices, respect the rights of its citizens, and ensure full accountability for abuses perpetrated by government forces.

The international community must not remain silent. An assault on democratic freedoms in one country threatens the global foundation of liberty and human rights. The World Liberty Congress will continue to stand in resolute solidarity with all those in Turkey—and around the world—who are fighting for democracy, justice, and human dignity.
