Statement by the World Liberty Congress on the 31st Commemoration of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide

This month, and every day, we remember the countless lives lost during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. In just 100 days, over one million Rwandans were brutally murdered. This atrocity targeted people from all walks of life, cutting short the futures of innocent men, women, and children.

As we honor the memory of those who perished, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and the inherent dignity of all individuals. True and lasting peace for the Rwandan people necessitates the establishment of a governance system that genuinely reflects the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The current administration’s authoritarian practices have stifled dissent and curtailed fundamental freedoms, hindering the nation’s path to genuine reconciliation and unity.

Furthermore, we denounce the manipulation of the 1994 genocide by the regime in power as a means to control the populace and mislead the international community. The tragic events of the past should never be exploited to justify oppressive policies or to wage conflicts in neighboring countries. Reports indicate that the Rwandan government has supported rebel movements in the Democratic Republic of Congo, exacerbating regional instability and suffering. Such actions betray the memory of the victims and undermine efforts toward regional peace.

The people of Rwanda deserve leadership that embodies integrity, transparency, and accountability. They deserve a government that fosters genuine unity, respects diversity, and upholds the rights of all citizens. As we reflect on the lessons of 1994, let us collectively strive toward a future where the horrors of genocide are never repeated, and where every Rwandan can live in freedom and harmony.
