Statement by the World Liberty Congress – The Americas Region

The World Liberty Congress welcomes and commends the principled stance of Mauricio Tabe, Mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico City, for publicly calling on Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to relocate the embassies of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua outside his jurisdiction. His message underscores a refusal to “normalize dictatorship” while defending human rights and democratic values.

At a time when authoritarian governments continue to repress civic freedoms across the hemisphere, the leadership of local authorities who stand against the symbolic legitimization of such regimes is especially significant. The dictatorships of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, as referenced in Mayor Tabe’s request, have been widely criticized by international human rights bodies for patterns of political persecution, suppression of dissent, arbitrary detention, and systemic violations of fundamental freedoms.

While formal foreign policy remains the responsibility of national governments, democracies are strengthened when public officials at all levels openly defend the dignity of victims and refuse to provide symbolic shelter to regimes that undermine democratic principles. Initiatives like this send a clear message of solidarity with the people of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua who continue to struggle for liberty, justice, and respect for human rights.

The World Liberty Congress reaffirms its commitment to defending democracy, the rule of law, and universal human rights, and calls upon leaders and civic institutions throughout the Americas to reject indifference in the face of repression and to uphold fundamental freedoms for all peoples.
