The World Liberty Congress stands in solidarity with Gemma Jones, a Spanish and Equatorial Guinean lawyer and human rights defender, following credible allegations of surveillance, defamation, intimidation, and threats linked to agents of the Equatorial Guinean regime.
According to available information, Ms. Jones was secretly recorded while carrying out her professional duties in Madrid, and the recording was later manipulated and broadcast on state television in an apparent effort to discredit her and damage her reputation. Following her public denunciation of these events, she reportedly faced threats aimed at deterring her from seeking justice.
If confirmed, these actions constitute a serious violation of fundamental rights and bear the hallmarks of transnational repression—the targeting of critics and human rights defenders beyond a state’s borders.
The World Liberty Congress unequivocally condemns any attempt to silence, intimidate, or retaliate against individuals exercising their fundamental freedoms. We call on the Spanish authorities to ensure that these allegations are thoroughly and impartially investigated and that Ms. Jones receives the protection to which she is entitled.
Transnational repression has no place in democratic societies. Freedom of expression, access to justice, and the protection of human rights defenders must be upheld everywhere.
