WLC Statement on the extradition of man who attempted to assassinate Masih Alinejad

The World Liberty Congress (WLC) welcomes the news that would-be assassin Polad Omarov is to be extradited to the United States for his part in an attempt to kill our president, Masih Alinejad.

As an outspoken campaigner against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s gender apartheid, Masih is a longstanding target for the regime.

Autocratic regimes like the Islamic Republic and their proxies cannot be allowed to evade punishment for heinous crimes.

The WLC thanks the US authorities for their diligence in pursuing this case.

But Masih is not the only one. We must never forget that transnational oppression by tyrannical regimes is on the rise. We only need to look at the recent murder of Alexie Navalny to see that dictators will stop at nothing to silence their critics.

The World Liberty Congress will continue to fight for the lives and freedom of brave democrats in the unfree world. In particular, today we think of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German citizen kidnapped by the Tehran regime, who is currently facing execution for calling for democracy in his native Iran.

We are building the Congress as a legitimate and democratic institution with shared principles and mission, representation of all countries under autocratic regimes and clear governance structure.
The Congress will meet every year for the annual General Assembly with the intention to become an alternative voice to autocratic regimes.
