The World Liberty Congress is deeply alarmed by reports that WLC member and Ugandan human rights defender Aloikin Praise Opoloje was taken into custody by military intelligence after being called to Namungoona Police Station under circumstances reportedly unrelated to her activism.
According to information shared by Ugandan civil society activists, Aloikin went voluntarily to the police station to address what she understood to be a routine matter. Upon arrival, she was reportedly informed that military intelligence was seeking her over alleged remarks concerning Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and that she would be taken away to be “disciplined.” These reports require immediate clarification from Ugandan authorities.
Aloikin is a prominent advocate for civil liberties, accountability and the fight against corruption. She received the EU Human Rights Defenders Award in 2025, recognizing her peaceful work for human rights and social justice. She has previously faced arrest and imprisonment for her activism.
The World Liberty Congress calls on Ugandan authorities to immediately disclose Aloikin’s whereabouts, guarantee her safety and access to legal counsel and her family, and release her unless she is promptly brought before a civilian court on a lawful, substantiated charge.
No human rights defender should be disappeared, intimidated, or placed outside the protection of the law for speaking out. Aloikin must be returned safely.
