Berlin wants to strengthen its commitment to people who are committed to freedom and democracy in autocratically governed states. Around the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November, there will be another “Berlin Freedom Week”, which premiered last year. This was announced by Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) together with the organizers.

In addition, the World Liberty Congress now has its European headquarters in Berlin-Mitte. The organization with more than 200 dissidents from more than 50 autocratically led countries is considered the world’s largest democracy alliance. Wegner and the founders of the organization, Masih Alinejad from Iran and Leopoldo Lopez from Venezuela, revealed a sign on the building, which also houses the Robert Havemann Society.

The “Berlin Freedom Week” is this time from 7 to 14. November planned. In this context, it should be on the 7th. /8. November a “Women’s Liberty Congress” and on 10. There will be a Freedom Conference on November. The latter is planned at the Colosseum film theater in Prenzlauer Berg – not far from the Gethsemane Church, which was an important meeting point for the GDR opposition.

At the first Freedom Conference in 2025, many persecuted oppositionists and former political prisoners from all over the world called for the fight for democracy and freedom.

Wegner said that for him freedom was the most important word in German. “Berlin is the city of freedom, and we owe this above all to the brave people who took to the streets in the autumn of 1989 and brought down the wall.”

But Berlin is also the city of hope for all freedom-loving people worldwide. “At the end of the day, freedom wins. In the end, people over arbitrariness and dictatorship.” Berlin will always stand by the side of freedom-loving people and always support the fight for freedom and democracy, according to the CDU politician.
